March President's Message

As I write this, we are preparing for a combined Nominating Committee and Board of Trustees meeting. It has been a busy week for your Trustees. The agenda was packed with decisions for the remainder of this year and into next year.

The Nominating Committee selected your future leaders, including your 2020-2021 NAIFA-California President. It will be exciting to see who has stepped up to be a part of your Board.

Speaking of stepping up, our Treasurer, Steve Frank, gave me an article that was first written 30 years ago and the information still applies. It involves the loss of one of your members. It reads as follows:

NAIFA-California was saddened to learn this week of the death of one of our members, Someone Else. Someone’s passing creates a vacancy that will be difficult to fill. Else has been with us for many years. Someone did far more than a normal person’s share of the work.

Whenever there was a job to do or a meeting to attend, one name was on everyone’s list. “LET SOMEONE ELSE DO IT.” It was common knowledge that Someone Else was among the hardest workers in the association.  Whenever there was a need, everyone just assumed Someone Else would do it. Someone Else was a wonderful person – sometimes appearing superhuman, but a person can only do so much. Were the truth be known, everybody expected too much of Someone Else.

Now Someone Else is gone. We wonder what we are going to do.  Someone Else left a wonderful example to follow, but who is going to follow up on the things Someone Else did? When you are asked to help, please remember, we can’t depend on Someone Else any more.

Does this hit home? I am proud to say that our association is starting to see more members step up on local and state levels. We also have three members on the NAIFA National Board, including next year’s President, Jill Judd.

I trust all of you read the “Member Benefits News” article that was distributed on February 20 from National reminding us of the benefits of being a member of NAIFA. In the article, NAIFA and The College of Financial Planning (CFFP) announced the 2018 LUTCF Scholarship Program is accepting applications. This is a great program with great information and promotes an agent as a professional in our business.

There is also information to apply for NAIFA’s Quality Award, upcoming webinars and a Member Benefit of the Month. You should take advantage of all the benefits as a part of your membership.

Hope everyone has the Career Advancement Conference (CAC) on their calendars.  Combined with the Day on the Hill, you have the opportunity to further promote yourself and your industry.

That’s all for now. NAIFA Makes a Difference.
