I trust you had a great Thanksgiving with family and friends. Now it is time start the final push for the 2017 production.

Can you believe 2017 is almost over? I trust you have had a great business and family life in 2017. This is the time to look at where you were on January 1 to see if both your professional development and personal development have met the goals you set for yourself. Did you get the new car or home, take the family on the dream vacation? Take or finish that advanced insurance course or certification?  Now is the time to plan for your dreams in 2018.

2018 is still going to be challenging for our industry, which is under attack from so many directions. If you do not believe me, let me give you an example. How many of you know that Blue Cross just pulled out of the California individual health market? Now leaving Blue Shield and Kaiser as the only choices left. If that does not get your attention, guess what Blue Shield did to your commissions—reduced them to 1.4 percent! I heard today that they are not going to pay some out of network expenses. I for one just went out of the individual health insurance business. That lower commission will not even pay my Starbucks iced tea bill.

Last month’s article featured getting involved. The question was asked—how? Let us start with your local association. There is no association that could not use another set of hands.  Volunteer to serve at a local meeting. You are already there so why not be a greeter at the door, or seek out new members, or lead the flag salute, or give the invocation? Ask your local board member how you can help. Believe me that will really rock their boat.

How about volunteering on the state level? In February the Nominating Committee, chaired by National Committee Chairperson Peter Buechler, will meet to select your next year’s Board of Trustees. Have you ever considered running for the Board? It is both challenging and rewarding. You get to be involved and see what is happening on the local and state level. Next year will be an exciting one for California as the National NAIFA President will be California’s very own Jill Judd. She will do a wonderful job and will bring new excitement to the Federation.

Contact me at for information if you are interested in serving on the state level. You will find it a new and exciting adventure.

Our Brown Bag webinar this month features “Failure is Not an Option” by Eszylfie Taylor. I am sure most of you have seen or heard about him, as he has been a speaker at many events including the NAIFA-National Convention.

And speaking of conventions, do not forget your own Career Advancement Conference May 16-18, 2018. It will be combined with the Day on the Hill. This is your chance to visit with your state legislatures, hear inspiring speakers and then see and meet with many NAIFA friends. You will hear more on this exciting combined event from President-Elect John Nilmeier. Stay tuned…

So much to do and so little time. Please do get INVOLVED. We do need you and you do need to help your profession and your clients.

Until next time, have a very Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and look forward to a great 2018.
