Legislative Update--October 2015

On October 3-6 we gathered in New Orleans at the NAIFA National meeting, where we celebrated 125 years of NAIFA leadership. One of the goals of the Government Relations Committee is to raise money for our Political Action Committee. This money is raised to help people get elected to office. Next year we will have 16 Assembly seats open. After that, there will be no open seats until 2022, so we will have this body for the next six years. This makes next year's election extremely important. In honor of the 125th year of NAIFA Leadership, our entire delegation took an extra PAC check to New Orleans. I would like to ask you to make your contribution in October, as all PAC money raised will stay in California.

The Fiduciary Standards rules continue to be an item of great attention to NAIFA and all of our members. If you have not done so, please visit the website, and watch the video NAIFA Recommendations on DOL Rule. This can give you some good insights into the issue, if you aren’t aware of it yet. Then, you need to call your federal legislators and voice your concerns. A visit with some of your local NAIFA members would be even better . NAIFA National is working very hard to make this impact favorable to our clients.

In addition on the state level, Covered California is reviving plans for possible creation of a new web-based platform that could be used for direct submission of enrollment applications,  that could bypass local agents. We are working on this issue with CAHU and Independent Insurance Agents and Brokers of California for giving input on this issue.

Both of the above issues are very important issues that we must address, and we need your help with legislators. If you know a legislator, please let me know. Our key contact lists are very important.
