Single Payer Healthcare-UPDATE

After holding SB 562 (Lara) at the Assembly desk and letting the authors know that there is a lot of work to be done on the bill before it could be considered by the Assembly Health Committee, Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon announced that the Assembly Select Committee on Health Care Delivery Systems and Universal Coverage will hold hearings during the legislative interim beginning in late September so that the committee can develop plans for achieving universal health care in California.

Speaker Rendon indicated that the hearings are going to provide an opportunity to talk about new ideas and not just rehash previously discussed proposals. His hope is that the hearings will help to determine the best path toward universal health care that could overcome potential federal and constitutional obstacles.

The California Nurses Association quickly criticized the Speaker’s announcement, and argued that the time for Single-Payer is now and not in the months to come.

In the meantime, a ballot initiative has been filed and will soon start collecting signatures that would remove “roadblocks” to establishing a single payer system. The initiative would create a new account specifically for healthcare expenses.

Stay tuned…
